28 countries (27 EU + UK), in three expansion tiers

We recommend a phased market approach. Most brands start with Tier 1 and add Tier 2 markets within 3–6 months of launch.

Tier 1Core Markets

DE, UK, FR, IT, ES, NL cover ~78% of EU marketplace GMV. Every O1 expansion starts here, simultaneously, in the first 30 days.

  • Germany
  • United Kingdom
  • France
  • Italy
  • Spain
  • Netherlands
Tier 2Growth Markets

PL and SE are the fastest-growing marketplaces in the EU. Added on top of tier-1 around day 60–90.

  • Poland
  • Sweden
  • Belgium
  • Austria
  • Czech Republic
  • Romania
Tier 3Expansion Markets

Smaller absolute volume, but materially higher conversion for category-specific listings.

  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Portugal
  • Hungary
  • Slovakia

How the rollout actually runs

Week 0 to Month 3, with dates instead of adjectives.

  1. Week 0

    Contract + handover

Catalogue, COGS, brand assets, ERP scope confirmed. Account lead + content lead + ad lead assigned.

  2. Week 2

    Listings drafted

Tier-1 locale listings translated by native speakers, marketplace-specific SEO applied, A+ assets adapted.

  3. Week 4

    Tier-1 live

DE / UK / FR / IT / ES / NL marketplaces live simultaneously. Sponsored campaigns active. First weekly report delivered.

  4. Month 3

    Tier-2 added

PL / SE / BE / AT layered on top. Ad spend tuned against contribution margin. Quarterly VAT + DAC7 obligations filed in our name.

Don't Skip the UK. Most Brands Do.

Post-Brexit, the UK is treated as a separate market by most expansion strategies, adding complexity that leads brands to delay or skip it entirely. This is a costly mistake. The UK is the second-largest e-commerce market in Europe.

Operator One treats EU + UK as a single expansion motion. We hold UK VAT registration, manage UKCA compliance, run Amazon UK and other UK-native marketplace accounts: all under the same contract and onboarding timeline as your EU launch.

EU Marketplace Expansion: Common Questions

Which European marketplaces does Operator One sell on?

We are active on 100+ EU and UK marketplaces including all Amazon EU locales (DE, FR, IT, ES, NL, SE, PL, BE, IE) plus Amazon UK, Bol.com, OTTO, Zalando, Cdiscount, Allegro, Kaufland, ManoMano, Leroy Merlin, ePRICE, La Redoute, and many more.

Do I need to manage separate accounts on each marketplace?

No. Operator One holds and manages all marketplace seller accounts under our Merchant of Record entity. You don't need your own accounts, and you're not exposed to account suspension risk.

How does UK expansion work post-Brexit?

Post-Brexit, the UK requires separate VAT registration, UKCA marking (replacing CE for many product categories), and compliance with UK-specific consumer law including GPSR equivalents. Operator One handles all UK-specific requirements alongside EU expansion, treating EU + UK as a single expansion motion.

How do you handle multilingual listings across markets?

Our in-house content team creates culturally adapted, native-language listings for each target marketplace, not just machine translations. We optimise for local search behaviour, marketplace algorithms, and category-specific buyer expectations.

What tier of marketplaces should I prioritise first?

For most non-EU brands, we recommend starting with Amazon DE, FR, IT, and ES alongside Bol.com in NL/BE, these five account for over 75% of EU marketplace GMV. We add additional marketplaces in subsequent phases based on category fit and logistics efficiency.
