Operator's guide

Selling on Amazon France: the operator's view

Facts sourced from the marketplace's own documentation and from regulators, written in our voice — no marketing fluff.

What it is

Amazon France (amazon.fr) is the dominant generalist marketplace in France with deep penetration into home, beauty, grocery and CE categories. French buyers are price-aware but also brand-sensitive, and the marketplace is heavily monitored by DGCCRF, ADEME and the French EPR system.

Who sells well here

Brands with strong French-language content and a clean compliance posture sell well across nearly every category; categories with EPR exposure (packaging, textiles, EEE, furniture, toys, batteries) require contracted PROs before the first sale. Locally, Cdiscount and Fnac coexist, but Amazon owns the lion's share of pan-category demand.

How selling works

3P sellers operate FBM or FBA-France, with Pan-EU pulling French inventory into DE/PL/CZ/IT/ES warehouses unless explicitly blocked. Vendor (1P) is occasionally offered to category leaders. Listing content must be in French — Amazon enforces this at the title and bullet level for the FR locale.

Compliance & fiscal picture

A French VAT number is required when storing inventory locally; otherwise OSS covers B2C from another EU base. EPR is the demanding piece: France runs separate schemes for packaging (CITEO), EEE (ecosystem/ESR), batteries (Corepile), textiles (Refashion), furniture (Eco-mobilier), toys (Eco-mobilier/Ecologic) and chemicals — each with its own unique identifier (IDU) that Amazon now verifies pre-listing. The Triman logo, sorting instructions (Info-tri), and an EU Responsible Person under GPSR are all mandatory on consumer-product listings.

What O1 actually does here

O1 sells on amazon.fr as the registered seller under our EU entity, with French VAT, CITEO + scheme-specific IDUs and a published GPSR Responsible Person address. Stock flows from our EU 3PL network into FBA-France when category economics work, FBM for low-velocity SKUs. We handle French-language listing content from your master data inside the O1 Suite.

Common gotchas

  • Triman + Info-tri labelling: mandatory on packaging since Jan 2022, enforced on listings since 2024 — non-compliant images get suppressed.
  • EPR IDU verification: Amazon now blocks listings without a valid scheme number per applicable stream, not just packaging.
  • French translation is enforced — auto-translated bullet copy that reads as machine-output is a frequent suspension trigger.
  • DGCCRF actively audits price-claims and 'crossed-out' reference prices — store the reference-period evidence for two years.
  • Pan-EU stock auto-routing into French FCs immediately triggers French VAT — disable per-country if you don't intend to register.

Why brands work with O1 on this channel

Amazon France is the most compliance-intensive Amazon EU locale by a meaningful margin. As your Merchant of Record we carry every EPR scheme, the Responsible Person registration and the French VAT — so you ship product, not paperwork. See the MoR model for what we take off your plate.

How we list your brand on Amazon France

The same three-step path we run for every brand: same contract, same ~30-day timeline, no surprises.

  1. Step 01
Catalogue handover into the O1 Suite

You ship product data, EAN/GTIN, images and stock; we map it to the marketplace's listing schema inside the Suite.

  2. Step 02
We open and operate the seller account

We register VAT, EPR and GPSR as the legal seller on Amazon France; you don't sign anything in-country.

  3. Step 03
Live orders → one monthly settlement

Your listings go live, orders flow into the O1 Suite, returns and customer support sit with us. You receive one consolidated monthly settlement.

Amazon France: Common questions

Can Operator One list my brand on Amazon France?

If we operate a live seller account on Amazon France (look for the 'Live' status pill on this page), yes. We onboard your catalogue under our Merchant of Record entity and you go live on the standard ~30-day onboarding timeline. Where the status is 'On request', we confirm fit and timeline on a discovery call first.

Do I need a separate seller account on Amazon France?

No. Operator One holds the Amazon France seller account under our MoR entity. You sign one master agreement with us; there is no separate marketplace contract for you to sign or manage.

Who handles VAT, compliance and returns on Amazon France?

We do. As Merchant of Record, Operator One is the party on the consumer invoice, so VAT collection, EPR, EPR registrations, DAC7 reporting (GPSR Responsible Person sits with O1 when we are your Importer of Record) and returns processing all sit with us, not with your brand.

How is Amazon France commission billed to me?

Marketplace commission, fulfilment fees, advertising spend and our service fee flow into a single consolidated monthly settlement statement. We share the full per-marketplace P&L for your catalogue on the discovery call.

Can I be exclusive on Amazon France?

Amazon France is one channel inside your O1 mix, and you keep the call on where else your brand sells. If you want Amazon France to be the only marketplace we run for you, we can scope the engagement that way; if you later want to add others, the same O1 entity covers them under the same master agreement.

How is buy-box or repricing handled on Amazon France?

Where Amazon France runs a buy-box-style mechanic, O1 Suite tracks the winner status and price gap per SKU and we repricer on rules you sign off on, not opaque automation. Where there's no buy-box, the pricing rules apply on top of the marketplace's own pricing logic instead.
