Selling on Zalando Germany: the operator's view
Facts sourced from the marketplace's own documentation and from regulators, written in our voice — no marketing fluff.
What it is
Zalando is Europe's largest pure-play fashion and lifestyle marketplace, with >50M active customers across 25 markets. Headquartered in Berlin; partner brands present alongside Zalando's own wholesale inventory.
Who sells well here
Fashion, footwear, accessories, premium beauty and lifestyle. Zalando is invite-only and curates against brand fit, sustainability profile, returns capability and EU scale. Indie / D2C brands without a 100-day returns operation rarely clear the bar.
How selling works
Partner Program (3P, Zalando-curated) or wholesale (1P). 3P sellers either self-fulfil via the Connected Retail model (drop-ship from owned stock) or use Zalando Fulfillment Solutions (ZFS) — Zalando's FBA-equivalent, run from German warehouses. Commission is category-based (~8–25%, with apparel at the top end). Zalando Marketing Services (ZMS) ad-spend typically 5–15% of revenue for active partners.
Compliance & fiscal picture
German VAT mandatory for ZFS (stock is held in DE). LUCID, WEEE-irrelevant, BattG-irrelevant for fashion but textile-EPR (Refashion FR, etc.) applies per country shipped to. GPSR Responsible Person applies. Zalando enforces a 100-day returns policy and free delivery at the listing level — non-compliance is grounds for de-listing.
What O1 actually does here
O1 operates Zalando from our DACH seller account when invited, with ZFS stock held in Germany under our VAT. Brand activation requires Zalando's onboarding committee approval — we can warm-introduce qualified brands but the gate is Zalando's. Listings, content and merchandising flow from the O1 Suite.
Common gotchas
- Zalando is invite-only — admission depends on brand fit, sustainability profile, EU scale; we cannot bypass the committee.
- 100-day returns is a hard contract term, not a guideline — operational planning must absorb a 25–35% return rate in fashion.
- ZFS storage fees in DE are non-trivial and compound for slow-movers — inventory hygiene is critical.
- ZMS ad-spend is informally required for visibility — partners not running ZMS get throttled in category browse.
- Free shipping is a partner obligation — your shipping cost is in your commission economics, not extra.
Why brands work with O1 on this channel
Zalando rewards brands that look operationally indistinguishable from Zalando's own wholesale — same delivery promise, same returns policy, same content quality. As MoR we carry the ZFS economics, the German VAT and the EU compliance stack. See how we work.
How we list your brand on Zalando Germany
The same three-step path we run for every brand: same contract, same ~30-day timeline, no surprises.
- Step 01Catalogue handover into the O1 Suite
You ship product data, EAN/GTIN, images and stock; we map it to the marketplace's listing schema inside the Suite.
- Step 02We open and operate the seller account
We register VAT, EPR and GPSR as the legal seller on Zalando Germany; you don't sign anything in-country.
- Step 03Live orders → one monthly settlement
Your listings go live, orders flow into the O1 Suite, returns and customer support sit with us. You receive one consolidated monthly settlement.
Zalando Germany: Common questions
Can Operator One list my brand on Zalando Germany?
Can Operator One list my brand on Zalando Germany?
If we operate a live seller account on Zalando Germany (look for the 'Live' status pill on this page), yes. We onboard your catalogue under our Merchant of Record entity and you go live on the standard ~30-day onboarding timeline. Where the status is 'On request', we confirm fit and timeline on a discovery call first.
Do I need a separate seller account on Zalando Germany?
Do I need a separate seller account on Zalando Germany?
No. Operator One holds the Zalando Germany seller account under our MoR entity. You sign one master agreement with us; there is no separate marketplace contract for you to sign or manage.
Who handles VAT, compliance and returns on Zalando Germany?
Who handles VAT, compliance and returns on Zalando Germany?
We do. As Merchant of Record, Operator One is the party on the consumer invoice, so VAT collection, EPR, EPR registrations, DAC7 reporting (GPSR Responsible Person sits with O1 when we are your Importer of Record) and returns processing all sit with us, not with your brand.
How is Zalando Germany commission billed to me?
How is Zalando Germany commission billed to me?
Marketplace commission, fulfilment fees, advertising spend and our service fee flow into a single consolidated monthly settlement statement. We share the full per-marketplace P&L for your catalogue on the discovery call.
Can I be exclusive on Zalando Germany?
Can I be exclusive on Zalando Germany?
Zalando Germany is one channel inside your O1 mix, and you keep the call on where else your brand sells. If you want Zalando Germany to be the only marketplace we run for you, we can scope the engagement that way; if you later want to add others, the same O1 entity covers them under the same master agreement.
How is buy-box or repricing handled on Zalando Germany?
How is buy-box or repricing handled on Zalando Germany?
Where Zalando Germany runs a buy-box-style mechanic, O1 Suite tracks the winner status and price gap per SKU and we repricer on rules you sign off on, not opaque automation. Where there's no buy-box, the pricing rules apply on top of the marketplace's own pricing logic instead.
